This camp was developed by Elizabeth Dimmitt, LPC and Lindsey Madsen, guidance counselor and many NW students who observed a community need and wanted to respond by creating a fun and helpful resource for our area children.

We are so thankful that NWMSU has supported this venture through research funds and coursework.  This is an opportunity for our university students to get hands-on project based learning opportunities all while meeting a community need

This camp was based a great deal of research and communication with numerous successful grief and loss camps from around the country.  We are hoping to continue growing and expanding our resources for the youth and their loved ones.

We are always open to feedback and would love to hear from you about the community needs, great ideas, and new resources you could contribute.

ABOUT US

Camp C.O.P.E. is a resource being offered to youth of Nodaway County and the surrounding counties who have experienced a significant loss. These losses may have been in the form of death of family member, death of a friend, incarceration of a care provider, removal from the home, moving to a new community, etc.

This is a one-day event, all staff have completed safety training, local and federal background checks, and an educational course on how to properly assist children that have experienced loss.

At each camp, every camper is paired with a trained volunteer to provide companionship, support and supervision throughout all activities. The camp has licensed counselors, certified guidance counselors, a nurse, and trained crisis responder on site.  It is not therapy but time to tell their story in a safe environment and process their grief in healthy ways all while making friends and having fun.

Camp COPE is full of regular summer camp activities such as water games, hiking, games and crafts, music and dance, while incorporating structured grief psycho-educational experiences.
